Social Mechanisms in Early Language Acquisition: Understanding Integrated Brain Systems Supporting Language
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter advances a new hypothesis-that in the earliest phases of language acquisition. infants combine a powerful set of domain-general computational skills with their equally extraordinary social skills to "crack the speech code." Further. it is hypothesized that the social brain-in ways we have yet to understand-"gates" the computational mechanisms underlying learning in the domain of language. Four levels at which the gating mechanism might work are developed. It is argued that the assertion that social factors gate language learning explains not only how typically developing children acquire language. but also why children with autism exhibit twin deficits in social cognition and language. and why nonhuman animals with impressive computational abilities do not acquire language.

Language development and acquisition in children
Language acquisition is a natural developmental process and is unique to Homo sapiens in which a child acquiring his or her mother tongue as a first language. The simplest theory of language development is that children learn language by imitating adult language. A second possibility is that children acquire language through conditioning. Noam Chomsky put forward innateness hypothesis. Piaget ...

Learning a new language also involves learning a broad system of norms for social relations. This study broadly showed how EFL learners’ speech act is conveyed from their nativecultures when they are communicating in English and demonstrated that there are somepossibilities of cross-cultural misunderstanding when interlocutors are engaged in the speechact of complimenting with native speakers of...

Processability Theory, a component of the cognitive approach to second language acquisition tries to enhance understanding of how the interlanguage knowledge systems can be restructured by second language learners (Pienemann, 1998, 2015). The present study intended to run a similar investigation into the syntactic development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL learners based on ...

The human brain is one of the most complex dynamic systems that enables us to communicate in natural language. We have a good understanding of some principles underlying natural languages and language processing, some knowledge about socio-cultural conditions framing acquisition, and some insights about where activity is occurring in the brain. However, we were not yet able to understand the be...

Although explicit and implicit knowledge of language learners are essential to theoretical and pedagogical debates in second language acquisition (SLA), little research has addressed the effects of instructional interventions on the two knowledge types (R. Ellis, 2005).This study examined the relative effectiveness of explicit and implicit types of form-focused instruction (FFI) on the acquisit...
